Point Pelee N. P.

Marsh Boardwalk Archaeological Investigations

In advance of redevelopment of the Marsh Boardwalk and Blue Heron visitor’s areas at Point Pelee National Park archaeological assessments took place to better add to the knowledge of the sites in the area and to inform mitigation strategies. The Marsh Boardwalk and Blue Heron proposed visitor infrastructure development overlies a significant archaeological site, beginning in the Woodland Period, and continuing to present. Work took place in several phases, the first was limited to areas not previously tested within the proposed project area and was undertaken to infill spatial gaps between previous testing projects. Phase 2 further investigated areas of interest that had been identified in Phase 1. Currently, the Park is determining how to proceed with mitigation strategies to be implemented prior to or during construction activity.
